In a recent survey conducted by Visa e-commerce, nearly 80% of internet users in the Asia-Pacific Region say they spent an average of AUD $4500 in the past 12 months.
The top 3 reasons why people prefer online shopping are being able to shop at any time(88% respondents), at the best price (83%) and being able to shop easily (82%)
The most commonly made online purchases were digital entertainment (59%), travel (51%) and fashion (49%).
Travel items included airline and rail tickets, hotel accommodation and travel packages. Nearly a quarter of the world’s population-roughly 1.4 Billion people use the internet on a regular basis in 2008 and in the Asia-Pacific Region, on average, a person spent about 20.2 hours a month online.
Australians are the biggest online spenders in the region with an average yearly spend of $6100.
In India, purchasing digital downloads is the most popular form of consumer e-commerce. 76% of the respondents from India have purchased music or software downloads in the last 12 months.
The internet has also brought about an increase in cross border transactions, with 75% of internet users surveyed in Hong Kong having bought an item from an overseas website in the preceding 12 months.
The message for all online markers is loud and clear-don’t confine your self to the domestic market. Sell overseas. Get search engine optimisation done for different regions to maximise your reach!
